I come from a town where the story of the Civil War is forever written on the very buildings themselves.
have you ever seen a brick wall with 150-year-old bullet holes? have you ever seen a cannonball burn or a huge bloodstain on floorboards? I have. every child in my hometown has. they can go in their backyards when it rains and pick minie ball bullets out of the soil
I have one on my dresser in my childhood bedroom. a local historian gave them out as prizes for answering trivia questions correctly when he came to talk at my school. there are hundreds more in shadowboxes at every antique store I explored as a teenager
you don’t need a statue to remember the history and the bloodshed. you need a statue to remember the justifications, to make it all seem justified still. to make it seem like anything but a senseless war in the defense of a great evil
there is no place for statues that glorify the Confederacy. end of story
